Handing over the keys to a business you’ve spent your life building and nurturing is rarely easy, but it can be necessary if you want to truly enjoy your golden years.

There will always be concerns when stepping aside and letting somebody else take the wheel and at Perpetual Equity we understand and value those concerns. In fact, we built OUR business around them!

Working closely with business owners, our goal is to facilitate a lucrative exit that rewards their life’s work and helps them move comfortably into the next stage of their lives.

Our Investment Criteria

We love SMEs. We invest in UK-based privately-owned companies with a turnover of £1m-£10m. We primarily invest in profitable, cash-generative businesses, but we also have the skills and the knowledge to turn struggling businesses around.

We work with what we know. We like established ‘real economy’ businesses that provide a critical product or service and employ real people. We don’t invest in startups and avoid any business we can’t immediately understand or describe in one sentence.

We specialise in the ‘founder dilemma’. So, if you’re a business owner seeking retirement but your business  currently depends on you, we want to hear from you.

Our Investment Approach

Introductory Call – Once the initial contact has been made and we’ve both signed a mutual confidentiality agreement, things kick off with a 30-minute introductory call with our founder, Jon. In this call, we’ll seek to better understand your business, your requirements and your motivations. By the end of this call, we’ll be able to tell you whether or not we can help you.

Fact-finding – If it’s a match, we’ll then probe deeper into the specifics of your business over one or more in-depth video calls. This will involve everything from your history with the company to the day-to-day operation, your motivation for moving on and your hopes for the future of the business.

Feedback – Once we have all the facts we need and feel like we’re developing a mutually beneficial relationship, we’ll arrange a feedback meeting. Here, we’ll provide our unique and educated views on the investment opportunity. This stage of the process also often includes a formal offer of investment.

Agreement – Should we agree on the outline terms for an investment, we then seek to formalise the agreement in a matter of days. We pride ourselves on our ability to work quickly and make what can be a difficult and stressful process seem fast and painless.

Post Transaction – We work with businesses that solve meaningful problems. Businesses that have been built over many years. So we often don’t seek to change too much too quickly and risk throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Why risk fixing what isn’t broken, after all? Our biggest challenge is often in replacing the outgoing founder but this is a challenge we relish. We’re also well-versed in building the teams and processes that allow small businesses to grow and succeed.

Monitoring – We monitor our investments carefully through close regular dialogue with our management teams.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US

We are a small group of investors and industry experts lead by Jon Coldridge. 

Jon has a strong history of leading and helping clients build high-performing teams. With a background in Sales and Marketing, Jon has founded and invested in several businesses in the recruitment sector largely around supplying IT, digital and change market solutions. More recently Jon has trained as a coach and brings the belief that people are more potent than they think into everything he does.

Jon currently has stakes in several businesses where he usually operates in an advisory role. Through Perpetual Equity, Jon is looking to invest in and help more businesses flourish. He is excited about the role entrepreneurs play in creating jobs, solving problems, and building amazing communities!
